Genetics and biosciences are traditionally the domains of professional science. Increasingly, open source technologies and online tools enable access from other domains. Artists and designers explore biological media, and "Biohackers" turn to genes and bacteria. What are the rights, risks and rewards for citizen science in biotechnology?
Philipp Boeing is one of the co-founders of Bento Lab, an all-in-one DNA laboratory that anyone can use. He wants an open and participatory future for biotechnology that mirrors computing with Raspberry Pi or electronics with Arduino, and will walk us through a personal history of participatory bioscience projects.
